Black Magic Boy vs. Mad Science Girl: The Comic: The News Post

Posted by Bundeluxe - April 23rd, 2024

Fellas, I comicked, and I'm going to ramble about it for a while because I have months' worth of thoughts to dump.

Huh? What???

Yeah, you read it here first - I had an idea for a project, started working on it, didn't give up after doing 0.05% of the work and actually finished it, and now I can technically call myself a "comic artist" and actually have a real, tangible finished project to point at instead of a series of random character illustrations??? Yeah surely this can't be real, this is a coma dream

Why so late?

So, as described in the post, somewhere around the start of November I decided to join the Sweet Sixteen Comic Contest on a whim, and quickly came up with this in a day. I only had slightly over a month to finish this project, so I had to rush out basically everything from the story to the character designs, but I think I did an alright job with them.

Then, I got the flu or something a few days before the deadline, and was incapacitated for the remaining days. I mentioned in that post that I would have been able to finish it with just a little more time. It's finally time to admit that I was completely full of shit here and, at best, may have been able to finish the lineart but nothing more. I hadn't even drawn a cover yet until the deadline had already passed.

I decided to take a little break from it and then spend slightly more time making every page look nice, but not get TOO caught up in the polishing to the point where I wouldn't finish it at all. I wasn't sure what to do back in December but waiting was probably the right choice. I'm glad it came out in its current state instead of unfinished, even if I did not get to participate in the contest.

Why make/finish it at all?

The reason why I did it is because I really wanted to. For years now I've been that idea guy whose entire shtick has been that he WANTS to make things but just never really "gets around to it" or something. Now that I've finished this comic, I can go into my next project knowing that I have the ability (and patience) to see things through to the end, even if it takes a while.

Another thing is that, for years now, I've wanted to tell stories but I was never sure what medium would be a good fit for me, so whenever anyone asked me what I wanted to do with my art, I'd always bounce around between "uhhh maybe games uhhh maybe animation uhhhhh" etc. But now, after doing this, I've become pretty certain that I should become a comic artist.

Despite never having made comics before other than a small handful of gag strips years ago, I really felt at home doing this and didn't really run into any major difficulties like I thought I would. I think making comics is a good, natural and much-needed evolution for me to take my work to the next level and grow as an artist.

And what better time to do so than now, with Newgrounds having that shiny still-pretty-new Multi-Image update!

So what now?

I've spent a lot of time looking at, thinking about and drawing these guys so I think I'm gonna expand on this concept a little. I had a lot of time to think about it, so I already have multiple ideas to flesh out this world and these characters. Nothing crazy, but just to start, I should probably give them some names, and some minor redesigns wouldn't be too bad either.

Thanks for reading the comic, thanks for reading the post, thanks for occasionally glancing at my work and thinking "hey, nice!" and I'll see you the next one.
